Chapel of the Apostles
Maurice Jennings + David McKee Architects University of the South, School of Theology, Sewanee, TN The 8,500 square foot chapel seats 250 people and serves as both a place of worship and as a classroom where the students of the School of Theology can practice the rituals associated with worship in the Episcopal Church. Its generously glazed walls and large ridge skylights permit a pattern of light and shadow, continually changing with the time of day, to bathe the walls, floors, and structural members. The wood mullion pattern that subdivides the entry glass announces a recurring geometric theme in the custom-built bronze entry door pulls, interior and exterior lights, furnishings, and items used in services. The chapel earned an Honor Award from the Arkansas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, an Honor Citation from the Gulf States Region of the American Institute of Architects, and an Award of Excellence from the Mid-Tennessee Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors. |
